Gas market – Rising prices in a nervous market

Gas saw moderate price rises last week. The weather across Europe also happened to normalise last week, but this was not enough to ease the pressure on the gas market.

The market seems to be very nervous at the moment. The current balance in the system actually looks quite good, despite low LNG deliveries. But the market seems to be focusing on the shortfall in the storage facilities we are still struggling with compared to last year, and this has supported the market at the front.

The gas storage levels are lower than they were at the same time last year, and this is making the market nervous, the closer we get to winter. Especially given the cold end we saw to last winter, where the market was hard pressed on the supply side. While there is no knowing whether this will happen again, the market still remembers it very clearly.

We are also seeing low LNG deliveries into the European gas system. While there are several LNG ships on the way, we are also seeing a lot of empty ships heading towards Europe. They are coming to pick up LNG in Europe and ship it to Asia, where the price is even higher. So even though ships carrying LNG are coming to Europe, it is not certain that the gas will reach European gas consumers.
With strong inputs from both coal and carbon, the upward pressure on the gas market has been maintained. We saw moderate increases last week and this week also opened up.
